OFFICIAL DATA LOOKUP

USGS Elevation Finder (US coverage)

Enter a point or optionally use browser GPS. Results come from USGS Elevation Point Query Service when the service is available.

Privacy: clicking Lookup sends your selected coordinates to this WordPress site and to the official USGS API. GPS permission is optional; no automatic lookup occurs.

OFFICIAL-SOURCE RESULT
Click Look up location to request data.

County results describe US Census geographic areas, which can differ from postal jurisdictions. Elevations are interpolated model values, not surveyed benchmarks.

How to use what is my elevation

  1. Check your input. Use gps or searched address / map point; confirm coordinate order, place identity or chosen file format.
  2. Set the method and units. Choose an appropriate datum, date, distance unit or geographic definition before calculating.
  3. Review the output. Interpret current ground elevation; pressure, oxygen, boiling point examples in context rather than relying on the map picture alone.
  4. Verify the result. Compare it with the stated data source or a controlled example, then export or share only if that function is available.

How the calculation or map lookup works

Use a latitude/longitude point to request ground elevation. This is terrain height, not the height of a phone above the street or your current building floor.

Worked scenario and common mistakes

Example: A location at sea level and a rooftop above that same spot have different heights; a terrain DEM normally reports the ground surface, not the rooftop.

Critical limitation: Different height datums and cell sizes can give different ground heights for the same coordinate.

Inputs, outputs and interpretation

Part What to check
Input GPS or searched address / map point
Expected output Current ground elevation; pressure, oxygen, boiling point examples
Failure mode Different height datums and cell sizes can give different ground heights for the same coordinate.

Data reliability and limitations

The output is only as reliable as its input positions, data definition and underlying geographic layer. If the interface needs a geocoder, routing engine, population raster, county polygon or solar-ephemeris library, it must identify that provider and its applicable date; a background map cannot substitute for the missing calculation. Different height datums and cell sizes can give different ground heights for the same coordinate.

Verification note: The calculation engine is present in the plugin; provider coverage, mobile behavior and external-service results still require live QA.

Meters, feet and reference heights

Elevation Equivalent
100 meters 328.08 feet
500 meters 1,640.42 feet
1,000 meters 3,280.84 feet

Why the same place can have two different heights

GPS devices may report ellipsoidal height, while a terrain elevation service commonly reports orthometric or modeled land-surface elevation. Those are not equivalent quantities. On steep terrain, even two valid DEM pixels can differ because they sample different parts of a slope. USGS EPQS services disclose source/coverage limits for US coordinates.

Best practices for elevation checks

  1. Record your latitude and longitude rather than only the place name.
  2. State whether the elevation is ground level, rooftop height or GPS device altitude.
  3. Keep the units and vertical datum with the value.
  4. Compare to a known topographic benchmark if the value matters for engineering.

10 questions about What Is My Elevation

Questions based on search intent and competitor topics; not a verified Google People Also Ask feed.

How do I check my elevation above sea level?

Select a location or enter coordinates, then query a supported terrain elevation source. Elevation is a modeled ground-height estimate at that point, not automatically your device’s live altitude.

Is phone GPS altitude the same as ground elevation?

No. GNSS often measures height relative to an ellipsoid and can have vertical error. Terrain elevation datasets usually use a vertical datum approximating mean sea level.

What is the difference between elevation and altitude?

Elevation generally describes ground height above a specified vertical datum. Altitude can refer to the height of an object, aircraft or GPS receiver.

Can I find my elevation without granting location permission?

Yes, on services that accept manually entered coordinates. Browser geolocation should be optional and requested explicitly.

Why do two elevation websites show different numbers?

They may use different terrain models, cell resolution, vertical datums and interpolation methods; a point on a steep slope can vary notably.

How do I convert meters elevation to feet?

Multiply meters by 3.280839895. If a data source is only precise to several meters, displaying many decimals in feet does not improve accuracy.

Is elevation the same as contour line height?

Contour lines join points of equal modeled elevation. A point-specific height may be interpolated between grid cells or contours.

Can an elevation finder measure a mountain summit exactly?

A general-purpose digital elevation model can smooth sharp summits. For certified heights use national mapping agencies or geodetic survey records.

What happens when elevation data are unavailable?

A responsible tool should show a no-coverage or provider-error message rather than reporting zero meters as an assumed result.

Which data provider does My Blank Maps use for US elevation lookup?

The bundled USGS elevation route is designed to request the USGS Elevation Point Query Service for US coverage; confirm provider connectivity and response date in live QA.

Accuracy note: Check the data source, method, and limitations before relying on any geographic result.
